THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: Let's step back for a moment and engage in an academic exercise. Let's suppose you're God. Now let's suppose you (as God) are trying to deal with the present world. There are two undeniable and unchangeable characteristics about your personality. On the one side, you're all holy and you exercise absolute justice. On the other side, you are all love and you exercise total mercy. You, being the God of nature, have decreed homosexuality to be an abomination because it completely thwarts the procreative processes you designed. You, being the God of life, have decreed abortion an absolute crime against humanity, because once again it thwarts procreation, but worse it does it through murder.
Now, after considering all of this, I have just one question for you. What do you (as God) do with Western civilization?
For two-thousand years, the gospel of your Son (Jesus Christ) has echoed through Europe. For over five-hundred years, the same Gospel has spread throughout the Americas and into the South Pacific. Yet it would appear that the governments of nearly all these regions are enacting policies that fund abortion and encourage homosexuality, even punishing those who object to them.
Now consider this. On the other side of the world, you have a large group of people (about a billion of them) who essentially reject the Gospel of your Son (Jesus Christ) but at least acknowledge his existence as a holy prophet. I'm talking about Muslims. They abhor abortion, homosexuality, and all the other immoralities the Western world currently promotes.
So I ask you again. If you are the all holy, and all merciful God; What do you do?
This is the real situation of our world today. I personally don't know what you would do, and I personally don't even know what I would do. I just consider myself lucky that I'm not God, and I don't have to deal with it. You can consider yourself just as fortunate. But there is a God in Heaven, who is dealing with it, and based on what we've seen so far, this is what we know.
The Western world continues to spiral downward in its path of immorality, even to the point of persecuting those who righteously object, and even to the point of trying to turn the children of the objectors against them. The birthrate of the Western world has fallen to stagnation in most places, and negatively in others. Thus the number of Westerners is dropping every day. Western governments are becoming more tyrannical in their policies, taxes are increasing, along with national deficits and debts. War engulfs the Western world, especially the English-speaking countries, particularly the United States, and there is no end in sight.
Simultaneously, the Islamic world advances. Middle eastern countries rise to become nuclear powers. Arab nations make obscene profits from the oil sold to Westerners. Islamic fundamentalism spreads throughout the globe. Muslim immigrants advance into Western nations, reproducing at three to four times the rate of native Westerners. Now even some Westerners are converting to Islam, seeing in it the order of morality they've been missing in their lives since childhood.
Is it an understatement to say "the writing is on the wall?" Am I just pointing out the obvious here? As it currently stands, Western civilization is in decline -- rapid decline. While the Islamic world is advancing at an alarming rate. I don't know if current trends will continue, but if they do, I know what the final outcome is. I suspect you do too. Could it be that God has made his decision? Could it be that God has decided it would be better to let Islamic heretics run the world, rather than Western apostates? Perhaps things will change. Perhaps the tide will turn. But as it stands right now, I don't see that happening.
In all of this, what are we to make of the Church? Historically speaking I would say Christianity is now reaping what it has sown. One-thousand years ago, a battle of politics and pride separated the the eastern churches from the western Church, and within a few centuries, the entire eastern world fell to Islam. A little less than five-hundred years ago, pride and politics caused western nations to brake away from the Catholic Church, making their own national churches, resulting in the rampant denominationalism we see today. Western Christianity is anything but united. Western Christians haven't been united in nearly half a millennium. Today, as a result, we see the erosion of Christian society in the West, accompanied by the slow and steady takeover of Islam. Anybody see a trend here?
No, I'm not saying that God is a Muslim. Nor am I saying that Muslims are right about God. What I am saying is that if we want to understand what is happening to our world, we need to look at our past -- particularly the lessons taught to us by the ancient nation of Israel. Throughout Israel's hardship in the Old Testament, the nation never ceased to be the chosen people of God. But that did not spare them from being conquered by their enemies. Whenever they succumbed to the immorality in their hearts, they found themselves at war with their neighbors. Sometimes they repented, and God spared them from defeat. Other times they remained hardened in their sin, and as a result, God allowed them to be defeated by their enemies, to the point of slavery and persecution.
The nations of the Western world are not Israel. Not even the great United States can boast of such a designation. But the New Testament Scriptures tell us the Church is the New Israel of God (Galatians 6:14-16), and in many ways she struggles and suffers much in the same way the old Nation of Israel did. A thousand years ago, the Church (the new Israel) allowed herself to be broken in half. As a result she lost half of her territory and her people to Islam. Tragedy turned to mercy as the new continents (Americas and Australia) were discovered, seemingly giving the Church an opportunity to start over anew. But within another few centuries, opportunity gave way to tragedy again as the Church (through pride and sin) lost control of Western civilization via the Reformation, Enlightenment and Modernism. Now she once again faces the real probability of loosing everything to Islam. In many ways, Islam has become the scourge of Christianity, and perhaps, in some ways this is by God's design. Could it be that God allowed Islam to rise to power as a way of keeping Christianity in check? Just as the Philistines were to ancient Israel, so Islam has become to Christianity. Whenever Christians repent of their sins and submit themselves to God's will, Islam is held back. But whenever Christians give in to their passions, and allow sin to run free in society, Islam advances with a fury.
What the people of the Western world don't understand is that Secularism can't save them. In fact, the more secularized the West gets, the more Islam advances. But I personally don't believe this is a lesson our governments are capable of learning. They are blind to their own stupidity, and as a result, they condemn themselves to repeat the same mistakes that are destroying them. The only thing standing between the Western world and Islamic rule is a vibrant and united Christianity, where Christians are obedient to their faith and subject to the will of God. Only then can Islam be turned back. But Western governments will never understand this, and they will do everything in their power to continue making the same mistakes, even punishing those who try to do the right thing. The fate of the Western world lies squarely on the shoulders of Christians themselves, particularly the largest church (the Catholic Church) and those churches willing to work with her in restoring a vibrant and united Christianity.
Individual Christians can help by simply obeying the precepts of the Christian religion -- one of which is to "be fruitful and multiply." Such obedience flies in the face of modern Secularism and Western sensibilities. Christians face an uphill battle, with Islam nipping at their heels all the way. To defy Secular Western culture is to obey God and thus save the very culture we defy. To surrender to the status quo is to eventually submit to Islam. It may not happen tomorrow, but it will happen someday, and when it does, we'll only have ourselves to blame. It's an interesting time we find ourselves in.
