Mainline church decline caused
by fertility rates, study shows
By Greg Warner
CHICAGO (ABP)—The decline membership in of mainline churches over the last century had more to do with sex than theology, research by a trio of sociologists suggests.
The popular notion that conservative churches are growing because mainline churches are too liberal is being challenged by new research that offers a simpler cause for much of the mainline decline—the use of birth control.
Differences in fertility rates account for 70 percent of the decline of mainline Protestant church membership from 1900 to 1975 and the simultaneous rise in conservative church membership, the sociologists said...
Granted, it's reasonable to assume that some people just got fed up with the liberal unorthodoxy coming out of the mainline Protestant churches and left for that reason. But according to the above article, that accounts for only a minority (30%) of the statistical drop. The majority (70%) of the decline can be directly accounted for in demographics alone. On average liberal Protestants just have fewer babies. Fewer children equals fewer replacement members for a church as a congregation ages. If one could sit in the back pew, of an average mainline Protestant denomination, over the last 50 years the trend would be noticeable. Looking over the heads of the people in front of you, the first thing you would notice is gray hair becoming more prominent as the years go by. Then as it seem that more than half of the heads in front of you are gray, some would slowly disappear over the years, one by one until the number of gray heads goes back to it's original ratio. But only one thing is different now. The overall headcount has dropped. Many of the pews are empty now.
The reason for this is the adoption (and in some cases promotion) of artificial birth control. Most Protestants embrace it now, whether liberal or conservative, and ultimately it will be their undoing. The only difference is that liberal Protestant churches have been embracing it a lot longer than conservative Protestant churches have.
The population that refuses to grow will only decline. The current situation in mainline Protestant churches is just a precursor of what will soon be coming to most conservative Protestant churches in the not-so-distant future. It's also a microcosm of what is about to befall western civilization in general.
You see, what a lot of people don't know is that every Christian denomination once considered artificial birth control a grave sin. No Christian church in 2000 years had ever accepted it. It was the Anglicans (Episcopalians) who broke that longstanding Christian tradition at their Lambeth Council on August 14, 1930. Soon after, other mainline Protestant denominations followed. Only the Roman Catholic Church resisted this 20th century influence, and today, only the Roman Catholic Church stands firm as the guardian of traditional Christian teaching on this issue. In today's western society, life without artificial birth control seems impossible to imagine. Most people simply will not stomach the idea of living without it. In North America, most Catholics just ignore the Church's teaching on it anyway. That's why western civilization (as we know it) is doomed. The countries where Protestants once dominated for hundreds of years (Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Canada, Australia and the United States) will soon give way to Catholic majorities if they're lucky. Those that don't can eventually look forward to Muslim majorities. Why? Because artificial birth control will disintegrate the liberal Protestant denominations eventually. Because conservative Protestant churches will soon follow their lead if they don't retract their permissive teaching on artificial birth control. Because when it's all said and done, the only Christians left will be practicing Catholics who reproduce, along with a small ultra-conservative minority of Protestants who do the same. Because these Christians will be accompanied by a growing Muslim population that also rejects artificial birth control. By the time we reach the 100th anniversary of the 1930 Lambeth decision, we may even see this demographic reality start to materialize in noticeable ways.
It's as simple as this. If Roman Catholics in America and Europe obey the teachings of the Church on artificial birth control, they will save western civilization from an Islamic takeover. If they fail to obey the Church on this, within a century, we'll be handing western civilization over to Islamic rule on a silver platter. In this Islamic takeover, no gun will be fired and no shot will be heard. The only sound anyone will hear will be the slap of a hand on a baby's bottom, followed by the cry of his first breath. Muslims will overtake our civilization by sheer numbers alone. When they are the majority, they will be in charge, and that will be that. Only obedience to the Roman Catholic Church's teaching on artificial birth control can prevent this from happening. That's it! Nothing else will do. We only have a few more decades of soul-searching left before it's too late.
You see, mother nature has an unwritten rule. The rule is: "reproduce or die!" She whispers this law not just to individuals, but to peoples, cultures and ethnicities. Holy Mother Church embraces this natural law as truth, and coupling it with God's moral law, she passes it on to her faithful children. Now it's only up to us to listen and obey. Failure to do so now will only spell certain consequences for our civilization later.
