Pope Changes His Papal Crest

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: Of course there is always the tendency to minimize this, however, this pope is known for teaching through symbols. The return of the papal tiara is highly symbolic, especially after it's absence for nearly five years. Symbolically, it would seem to represent a return to authoritative administration after a period of pastoral instruction. Such a change would be most welcome among the faithful who have endured the tyranny of "progressive tolerance" in the Church for far to long. Our pope has done a marvelous job instructing the faithful on what the Catholic faith is and should be. Now it is time to put some teeth behind it and begin enforcing the message. Whether or not that is the pope's message here remains to be seen, but that's how I'm interpreting it.

The Holy Father should wear the tiara as well as showing it on his coat of arms.

The question is, why have the Popes laid aside the tiara in the first place? It perfectly sybolised their rôle in the Church; whereas the ordinary mitre is a less powerful symbol, because even ordinary bishops wear it. I also want to know why the papal three-bared cross staff is not use; the last time that powerful symbol was used was during a special ceremony by Pope John Paul II, and he only used it one time.

If one takes a closer look, the Papal miter with the tiaras looks like the mitres worn by Eastern bishops, except the Eastern mitres don't have the triple crowns. It does not look like the traditional "beehive" tiara.

I don't think the Pope would put on the tiara on his head. After all, he was never crowned but rather invested with the Pallium. The pallium is a better symbol of the Papal ministry than the tiara.

But Ben, other bishops wear the pallium. No other bishop wears the tiara.
