House Raises National Debt Ceiling
THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: I am pleased to report the United States government may now have the money it needs to pay for our national debt obligations....
Whew! That was a close one.

Dear Catholic Knight,
I believe the media, both in the US and internationally, has been largely responsible for whipping up an atmosphere of panic and fear around this situation.
when one stops to consider the question of default, one must bear in mind a few sailient points.
'Who will be unpaid'?
'A range of groups'...
'Who is included'?
'the millitary, including serving millitary personnel'.
is it wise to leave soldiers, sailors and airmen unpaid'?
'Probably not'.
'Is it ethical'?
'Definitely not'.
What does history say about leaders who have stiffed their defence forces in the past??
Not to mention the immorality of leaving veterans, the elderly and the disabled (not a few of these disabled in service to their country) in reduced circumstances.
Now to pay off the debt without injuring the genuinely vulnerable - the 'widow and orphan' - the very persons Catholic Christian social teaching and the very word of God itself calls us to reach out to.
Read the prophets of the Old Testament and they complain about the same thing - injustice and corruption within the upper echalons of church and state, crushing of the poor, opression of 'widows and orphans', preaching a message to remain in comfortable power (telling the people what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear) .
Additionally, , we need to set about lifting the yoke of endebtedness from around the necks of our children and grandchildren by actually hitting up the ratbags who helped get us into this mess in the first place - the wallstreet banxters and multinationals who, upon being bailed out by government in the US, went on to rake in even larger prophets and pay even bigger executive golden bonuses than ever while the rust belt continues to rust and the people stagger under the weight of recession.
Since 70% of the Federal budget is Defense, social security, and Medicare/Medicaid, only by reducing one or all of these will the deficit really be eliminated. The only other alternative would be raising tax revenues to increase money going into the treasury.
I doubt Americans have the courage to reduce defense, social security or Medicare/Medicaid nor the will to increase taxes. Therefore, the deficit will continue to grow and strangle the government with interest and continue enriching the banks.
