(California Catholic Daily) - When Sonoma County Pro-Life advertised its annual Rally for Life held last Sunday, it promised that its keynote speaker -- Santa Rosa Bishop Robert Vasa -- “is sure to challenge and inspire us all.” Bishop Vasa did not let them down.THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: While the excommunication scene above, from the film 'Becket,' seems a little 'over the top' with pomp and circumstance, I do think it accurately conveys the sentiments of most faithful Catholics today, particularly in the United States and Europe. How long must we endure the Church's tolerance of these scandals? How long will it be before the bishops finally say enough is enough? How many more millions of babies must die before the hierarchy FINALLY does its job? We are just sheep, but they are the shepherds. They carry the crosier for a reason. When will they finally drive out the wolves from among us!?! Your comments?
“Any government leader, particularly those who claim to be Christian, who claim to be pro-choice, is unworthy of public office,” Bishop Vasa told the rally at Old Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa on Jan. 22. “Absolutely unworthy and absolutely unfit for public office.”
Politicians who support abortion are “as guilty of abortion as those who choose it themselves,” he said. And Roe v. Wade, said Bishop Vasa, was an “illicit and invalid” decision.
Because of its pro-abortion policies, said Bishop Vasa, the U.S. is no longer “the land of the free and the home of the brave. It's a land of the imprisoned and the home of the cowards.”
The bishop’s remarks, reported the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, brought cheers from a crowd of about 100 people who gathered in the afternoon rain to hear his speech.
“Vasa suggested such leaders who publicly hold such a position shouldn't accept communion at Mass,” reported the Press Democrat. “He also said they could be excommunicated, or banished from the church through their actions.”
“In some ways, they excommunicate themselves,” the Press Democrat quoted the bishop as saying in an interview following his speech....

Pro-Choice Catholic Politicians Excommunicate Themselves and are Unfit For Public Office

Perhaps the Church will never learn this lesson. Could go on for a very long time, at least.
I can understand some pastoral patience, particularly in light of the poor catechesis we have been subjected to for the past forty years or so. But at some point, enough is enough. If, as bishop, you have made public statements sucha s this, given a personal audience to the offending pols in your diocese, and the pols still maintain their pro-choice position, I'd say tis time to shake off the dust. Sometimes, you gotta leave to come home again.
Sir Knight, until bishops, even as outspoken as Vesa "do the Becket" and FORMALLY excommunicate these apostates, it will remian "business as usual" as far as Pelosi, biden, Kerry, etc are concerned. Push is coming to shove in the US of A, Mr Knight and it looks like we will see several legal moves against the church in the second Soetoro term. Pete Frey
Agree entirely with "Anonymous". Bishop Vasa said: "Politicians who support abortion are as guilty of abortion as those who choose it themselves,”
It is easy for our Bishops to just say this rather than do something about it.
Bishop Vasa suggested as well: "leaders who publicly hold such a position shouldn't accept communion at Mass.” He also said "they could be excommunicated, or banished from the church through their actions".
Now - has Bishop Vasa ever done this or will he ever do this?
Will any Bishop actually be brave enough to do it and more importantly will he be backed by other Bishops and the Pope? I think that is the problem - lack of support both in his own country and Rome too - otherwise it would be occurring now.
Catholic Knight,
I assume you are in the service of the Queen of Heaven and therefore I suggest to you a nationwide Rosary Campaign, beginning as soon as possible, and culminating with special celebrations on the 8th December, feast of your nation's Patroness under her title of Immaculate Conception. She has saved Christendom before and she can do it again, but this has to be asked for en masse.
The bishops would hopefully mount such a campaign, explain Mary's role in saving the Church (her maternal care willed to us by Jesus as she stood under His Cross with St John, her coming to the aid of her children - Lepanto etc, and her appearances throughout history calling us back to God with the Rosary). The priests would be responsible for organizing their parishes at the direction of their bishops and provide the local impetus, while families and singles would do well to encourage and support each other in the daily recitation of the Rosary and associated parish events since forming a new habit or reactivating an old and nearly forgotten one is not easy. The aim is Catholic unity and solidarity under the leadership of Mary, Help of Christians.
Catholic knowledge and practice has been slipping away for generations throughout the western world, allowing the present state of affairs as you have noted. However, all is not lost and the Rosary is the key: the Gospel will be opened up to the poorly catechized by meditation upon the mystery proper to each decade, and desire for amendment of life will thus be roused and met with graces from Heaven to carry out that reformation.
This jaded world also needs to see and experience pious devotion. How about a return to local processions on special feast days if this has been discontinued. I don't know about the situation re processions in America but remember participating in pre-1962 processions here in Australia when a child. Girls, depending upon age, would again don their First Communion or Confirmation white dresses and veils for such occasions. Carrying baskets full of rose (or other flower) petals, they would drop a carpet of petals for the priest carrying Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament or the bearers of Our Lady's statue to pass over. Such is an act of love and respect for God and His Blessed Mother and makes the Church visible in a secular world, providing a witness to Faith.
I have read your post on Our Lady of America and the website you linked, and it seems to me that the National Rosary Campaign I have suggested has the potential to achieve the reformation of life called for by Our Lady of America, providing an example to other nations. Just a thought.

and yet Catholic bishops and Cardinals still give them the Blessed Sacrament.
I know for a fact that Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi are recieving communion from their pastors including the Bishop of the Washington DC diocese.
Sacreligous.
My apologies - I posted the above comment under the wrong article. It was meant to go in the comment section for "Religious Freedom LOST in the United States" and therefore I'll post it there now.

...i think we should remain obedient to the pope. He will decide what must be done and when it should be done. as you say we are the sheep. Funny enough, our priest spoke out last night during mass about confirmations - he spoke quite sternly about how confirmations have turned into photo-shoots! And how young people may not return to the mass again. It wasnt easy for him to speak so forcefully - but during every word i was willing him on. I made a point of shaking his hand afterward and of thanking him for making a stand. unfortunately i think the whirlwind is coming and it wont be stopped.
It didn't help any that Cardinal Dolan invited the 'Spawn of the Devil' himself to the A.S. Dinner! That was scandalous! How many not well catechised Catholics, or newly converted Catholics are scratching their heads in bewilderment due to this fiasco? I know Protestant friends are baffled as am I! Trying to be 'civil' to Obama was like inviting Margaret Sanger to a baby shower in a black neighborhood! Putting aside those "pesky" political differences (abortion/euthanasia and the HHS Mandate from Hell) for a few hours of laughs and fine food did NOTHING to help in our fight for LIFE!! God help us when our most prominent shepherd lets us down! TRUST in NO MAN! TRUST ONLY in GOD!
