Religious Freedom LOST In the United States

(CNA/EWTN News) - Pope Benedict XVI warned today of a “grave threat” to religious liberty in the United States that requires American Catholics to respond with intelligence and courage.

“It is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness presented by a radical secularism which finds increasing expression in the political and cultural spheres,” he said Jan. 19 in an address to a group of American bishops visiting the Vatican.

The Pope said he was particularly concerned with “certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion.”..

(Star-Telegram) - The United States is a nation founded on the principle of life, liberty and justice for all. Throughout the history of this great nation, the religious communities and those in posts of civil authority have recognized that free practice of religious belief is foundational to our country.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...." But in recent days the latest salvo in the attack on religious freedom was fired by the Obama administration and, sadly, by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, a Catholic.

On Jan. 20, Sebelius announced the administration's decision to mandate the inclusion of particular health services in insurance coverage that would result in Catholic institutions having to provide coverage that violates Catholic Church teaching and, therefore, Catholic conscience.

The HHS ruling requires that sterilization and contraception, including controversial abortifacients, be among the "preventive services" coverage in almost every healthcare plan available to Americans, including health plans offered by religious organizations.

(CNA/EWTN News) - Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, head of the U.S. bishops' conference, says the Obama administration has revoked the religious freedom of groups that do not regard women's fertility as as “disease.”

“The Catholic Church defends religious liberty, including freedom of conscience, for everyone,” the New York archbishop and conference president wrote in a Jan. 25 Wall Street Journal editorial, addressing the government's final decision to require contraception coverage in most new health plans.

With this decision, the cardinal-designate wrote, “the Obama administration has failed to show the same respect for the consciences of Catholics and others who object to treating pregnancy as a disease.”

On Jan. 20 the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed it would impose the contraception coverage mandate on most religious institutions, with a narrow exception for groups whose main purpose is the “inculcation of religious values” among people of the same faith.

“Even Jesus and his disciples would not qualify for the exemption,” Cardinal-designate Dolan noted, “because they were committed to serve those of other faiths.”

Health and Human Services finalized the contraceptive mandate just days before the annual March for Life, an event that mourns the anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision...

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: In what is threatening to become the story of the 21st century, religious freedom is being lost (particularly for Catholics) in the United States of America. The culprit is in 'how' the courts and the legislatures interpret the term 'religious freedom.' In that, the judges and politicians are interpreting 'religious freedom' strictly in terms of religious worship, meaning freedom to engage in the ceremonial rites of one's choice. While religious conscience, the freedom to morally act according to one's beliefs, is being ignored. The latest case with the Obama administration and the HHS is just another link in a long chain of offences. This however, is Obama's second attempt to take what had been a state and local conflict to the national level.

Previously, Catholic Charities have been shut down in a few states throughout the Union, due to the Church's refusal to adopt children to homosexual couples. Furthermore, the City of San Francisco, one of the most homosexual-friendly cities in the nation, has openly condemned the Catholic Church in an official statement, calling upon Catholics to openly rebel against Church teaching. The United States Supreme Court has sanctioned this action, allowing the city statement to stand, without any fines or penalties.

Now, the Obama administration has made two direct attempts to undermine and attack the inner workings of religious institutions in America. The first was in the form of forcing churches to hire women and doctrinal dissenters to teaching positions within religious schools. Thankfully, the Supreme Court struck this down unanimously (9 to 0) in what was a humiliating defeat to the Obama administration. With that failure behind them, the Obama administration has pushed ahead full-speed toward forcing all religious institutions (especially the Catholic Church) to provide medical services that directly contradict religious conscience. The administration knows this and that is why it is doing this. By pushing forward in driving a wedge between religious worship and religious conscience, the administration knows it can make inroads into controlling religious institutions within the United States, with the long-term eventuality of defining 'orthodoxy' for them.

Catholic bishops across the United States are unifying against this clear threat to religious freedom that is presently under way. Catholics are being urged to contact their congressional representatives and demand a stop to this assault on religious liberty.  Non-Catholic Christians would be wise to join them.

That what happens when the Bishops and the Catholic Healthcare Association believed that liar in the White House and endorsed Obamacare - it has now come back to bite them in the - you know what. Outside of facing the cutoff of Medicaid and Medicare payments and continuing operations and returning to per Medicare days and accept chickens, cabbage heads or ears of corn for payment the only option is for the Church and its affiliated Catholic Hospitals and social agencies is be sold off. I worked for a Catholic Hospital for 30+ years in the post Medicare era and as Comptroller examined the hospital’s financial records from the day it open in 1902 and yes these were the payments received for medical care up to 1966.

Catholic Knight,

I assume you are in the service of the Queen of Heaven and therefore I suggest to you a nationwide Rosary Campaign, beginning as soon as possible, and culminating with special celebrations on the 8th December, feast of your nation's Patroness under her title of Immaculate Conception. She has saved Christendom before and she can do it again, but this has to be asked for en masse.

The bishops would hopefully mount such a campaign, explain Mary's role in saving the Church (her maternal care willed to us by Jesus as she stood under His Cross with St John, her coming to the aid of her children - Lepanto etc, and her appearances throughout history calling us back to God with the Rosary). The priests would be responsible for organizing their parishes at the direction of their bishops and provide the local impetus, while families and singles would do well to encourage and support each other in the daily recitation of the Rosary and associated parish events since forming a new habit or reactivating an old and nearly forgotten one is not easy. The aim is Catholic unity and solidarity under the leadership of Mary, Help of Christians.

Catholic knowledge and practice have been slipping away for generations throughout the western world, allowing the present state of affairs as you have noted. However, all is not lost and the Rosary is the key: the Gospel will be opened up to the poorly catechized by meditation upon the mystery proper to each decade, and desire for amendment of life will thus be roused and met with graces from Heaven to carry out that reformation.

This jaded world also needs to see and experience pious devotion. How about a return to local processions on special feast days if this has been discontinued. I don't know about the situation re processions in America but remember participating in pre-1962 processions here in Australia when a child. Girls, depending upon age, would again don their First Communion or Confirmation white dresses and veils for such occasions. Carrying baskets full of rose (or other flower) petals, they would drop a carpet of petals for the priest carrying Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament or the bearers of Our Lady's statue to pass over. Such is an act of love and respect for God and His Blessed Mother and makes the Church visible in a secular world, providing a witness to Faith.

I have read your post on Our Lady of America and the website you linked, and it seems to me that the National Rosary Campaign I have suggested has the potential to achieve the reformation of life called for by Our Lady of America, providing an example to other nations. Just a thought.

Sir Knight, the bishop of the US and the catholics in this country have no one to blame but themselve. Ever since Humanae Vitae (1968) Catholics began dissenting from church teaching on contraception, aided and abetted by liberal priests and bishops. As Paul VI warned, contraception will open the door to abortion, easy divorce and other moral evils once the sacred notion of marriage and human sexuality were broken down. The bishops and the whole USCCB apparatchiks handed over their autonomy to the federal govt, as well as catholic colleges (thanks to Fr Hesburgh) in exchange for federal money, never thinking that with federal money comes federal regulation/control. "President" Soetoro would not be in the white house today were it not for the support given to him by CATHOLICS who voted overwhelmingly for the party of death. Who sews the wind reaps the whirlwind. There has been an increasing Eastern Zen attitude that has been sneaked into the back door of Catholic consciousness. In the old days, Catholics were not so passive and fatalistic. Prayer is not enough to change things; Catholics must act. A lawsuit going to the supreme court must be initiated. Then Catholics must hold their noses and support the republican candidate even if its shallow big business guy Romney. In addition, coalitions with all groups that would be affected must be made. Action and prayer is necessary but emphasis on action.

Anonymous, outside of the Pro-Life organizations there are no other Catholic political organizations that could form coalitions with other like minded non-Catholic organizations. The largest Catholic organization, the Knights of Columbus, are not political active other than supporting single issues like Pro Life.

This is what you get from the "spirit of Vatican II" crowd having been in control for 45 years. This so called spirit is actually a mental fog of lack of clarity of what it means to be Catholic. Marxist influenced liberation theology and hippie attitudes is what came from this lack of clarity about what a Catholic is. Now we reap what we've sewn; pedophile scandals, loss of religious rights, and loss of identity. Perhaps we can redefine what the spirit of Vatican II really is to mean something more truly Catholic and regain what was lost.

Mr Knight,

Please let us know how your father is getting along. I am praying daily for the Lord to watch over him and to meet his material needs.

Time and events move so quickly and prayer lists are long these days. There is so much going on in the world that causes worry, perhaps if you could post the reminder again at the top of the blog your other readers could remember to pray for him.

I know that like me, many of your readers hold you and your family, albeit unknown to us directly, in our hearts with deep concern and affection.

Thank you Luciana. My father's situation has not improved, but sadly gotten worse. He is no longer threatened with the loss of his pension. Now he has lost it completely. He was already in failing health and now the stress has caused him to be hospitalised for a cardiac arythmia. They are searching for the cause of his chest pain and believe it may be stress related. He will most certainly have to sell his home and he is hoping to downsize to something small enough for my mother and him to live off the meager income of Social Security. The only good news is he's trusting in God to get him through this, and though he is a staunch Protestant, he is showing greater respect and fraternity with the Catholic Church. I believe his stay at the local Catholic hospital was comforting to him.

Mr Knight,

Thank you for the update on your father - I am so sorry to hear the sad news about this terrible situation. Please know that I am thinking of your father and mother and that they are in my prayers daily, and please keep us apprised of both his health and financial/home situation.

While my Bishop's letter was read to the Mass attendees this past Sunday, not one word was spoken by my pastor during his homily regarding this serious issue. Not one word that we should write to our Congressman, Not one word how the Constitution is being violated. Not one word comparing our government to Henry VIII and his fight with Rome.

We didn't hear a letter, but the homily was very good regarding this matter. The bishop's letter comes this weekend. At our Knights meeting last night, our Pro Life director's report regarding Komen, and this HHS debacle received a standing O from the council members when he concluded his report.
